The Special Victims Unit (SVU) was formally created in 2023 to better focus on crimes against children, domestic violence, human trafficking, and sexual crimes. National prosecution standards place an emphasis on assigning these categories of criminal prosecutions to prosecutors who are specifically trained and experienced to handle these types of cases. The prosecutors assigned to SVU cases follow the case from the beginning of the investigation through final court disposition. This process is known as a vertical prosecution. The unit currently is comprised of two full time prosecutors and a coordinator for child abuse investigations.
