Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where are you located?
    • The Victim Services Division is located in the Cumberland County Courthouse - East Wing. Our office can be accessed by using the rear elevator on the 2nd floor to 2R.
  • Where can I park?
    • All parking for the courthouse consists of parking kiosks along the streets surrounding the courthouse or in the Pomfret Street Parking Garage, located at 35 West Pomfret Street. See Carlisle Borough Parking Information for further details.
  • What is a subpoena?
    • A formal legal document that compels an individual to appear and testify at a legal proceeding.
  • What is the purpose of bail?
    • To ensure the defendant's appearance in court. In some cases, bail conditions are imposed, that may include No Contact with the victim or not being allowed to return to the residence of the victim.
  • How should I dress for court?
    • In a manner that shows respect for the judicial process and enhances your credibility. The general rule is to be comfortable. Clothing with rips, holes, obscene or offensive language, exposing too much skin (such as shorts, crop tops, tank tops, halter tops, etc.) is not recommended.
  • How is court ordered restitution collected and enforced in adult criminal cases?
    • A payment assessment is completed by the Court Collections Unit, and defendants are placed on a monthly payment plan, based on their ability to pay.
    • All fines, costs, and restitution are paid in the Clerk of Courts office by cash, certified check, or money order.
    • The Court Collections Unit monitors offenders' payment status and hold offenders accountable through their procedures due to failure to pay.
  • What should I do if restitution payments are never made, or stop being made?
    • Contact the Victim Services Division and ask to speak with the advocate that handles the restitution non-payment calls? The advocate will work to obtain the reason for the non-payment(s) by accessing county and/or state systems and by contacting the Court Collections Unit for case status. There is a process in place that the Court Collections Unit must follow if an offender is not in compliance with their payment.
