An Sexual Violence Protection Order (SVPO) helps protect victims of sexual violence from further harm or intimidation, even if no criminal charges have been filed. Unlike a PFA, an SVPO does not require a close relationship between the victim and the abuser.
What Protection Can a SVPO Provide?
If an order is granted, then the defendant can be prohibited from several activities, including:
- Contact with the petitioner
- Attempting or having any third-party contact with the petitioner
- Going to the petitioner's residence
- Going to the petitioner's school
- Going to the petitioner's workplace
Who Can File a SVPO?
A Sexual Violence Protection Orders (SVPO) are appropriate in cases of sexual violence where the victim and perpetrator do not have and/or have never had a family, household or intimate partner relationship. Examples are:
- Strangers
- Acquaintances
- Friends
- Coworkers

SVPOs can be filed regardless of the ages of the parties involved. However, if the victim is under 18, an adult must file on the minor’s behalf.
