The Cumberland County EMS Council proudly administers the Rex Carmichael EMS Scholarship, created through generous private donations to support future EMS providers. Named in honor of Paramedic Rex Carmichael—a lifelong Cumberland County resident and dedicated public safety professional—the scholarship helps cover tuition and related costs for individuals pursuing EMS certification in Pennsylvania with a commitment to serve locally.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this EMS scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria at the time of application, award, completion of training, and receipt of certification:
- Be a resident of Cumberland County OR
- Be a member in good standing (volunteer or paid) with an EMS agency or fire department that provides first-due 911 service in Cumberland County.
Scholarship Amount & Payment
Total Scholarship/reimbursement amounts vary depending on the pursued training/certification level:
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - $1,000
- Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) - $1,250
- Paramedic - $1,500
Candidates who are selected will receive awarded funds in the following scholarship/reimbursement amount and schedule:
First 50% – Paid at Registration
- Cumberland County EMS Council will pay 50% of the scholarship directly to the selected EMS Training Institute upon the awardee’s registration.
- If the awardee has already paid for registration/tuition, this amount will be reimbursed directly to them upon submission of a receipt.
Final 50% – Paid After Certification
- The remaining 50% will be reimbursed to the awardee after successful completion of the training program and receipt of their Commonwealth of Pennsylvania EMS certification.
- To receive this reimbursement, the awardee must submit both their proof of payment and a copy of their EMS certification to the EMS Council.
Application Process
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and funding is awarded annually by the EMS Council’s Scholarship Committee.
